OPPORTUNITIES AROUND YOU
The world we are today consists of two things, that is problems and opportunities. Opportunities arise when there are problems. But the fact is, not everybody realizes opportunities in the midst of problems. Only a few people see opportunities when problems arise, unlike the white men. Below are the examples of popular figures in the world who created opportunities for themselves in the midst of problems:
1. Mark Zuckerberg: The young American is tyhe founder of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. His popular website Facebook, was established when he discovered that he and his colleagues in Harvard University had the problem of getting connected with each other both within and outside the university. He then created the platform that could solve such problem and the result is Facebook. He then also use that opportunity to generate income for himself when he discovered that he was getting much traffics. And today, the 34-year old is the youngest billionaire in the world and number 8 in the world with an estimated net worth of US$67.1 billion.
2. Mark Stevens: He established Trevo after he succeeded in getting his mother cured from an ailment. He went on a research of getting a medicine containing liquid from fruits and sea products that will cure his mum. He later found that and used the opportunity to generate income for himself by introducing the medicinal liquid to other Americans. Today, he is also a multi billionaire being the President and CEO of TREVO, a company that has many international branches across the world.
3. Jason Njoku: He is the founder of Iroko TV, a movie platform on YouTube. He established Iroko TV when he couldn't get movies for his mum and then maximized that opportunity of making money by monetizing the platform. He is also among the youngest billionaires in Africa.
4. Olalekan Olude, Opeyemi Awoyemi and Ayodeji Adewunmi. They created the website to assists job seekers in making it easy for them to assess the vacancies available at organizations, also the recruitment criteria and procedures and all other important information regarding employment into various companies across Africa. The three founders are graduates of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
5. Babatunde Oladosu: This young Nigerian is a first class graduate of Economics from Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU), Ile-Ife. He is also the founder of Edubridge Academy. He established Edubridge when he discovered that most Nigerian graduates find it difficult to get jobs as a result of their lack of exposure towards the recruitment process and procedures. And also he discovered that some of them do not konw how to write a professional CV. He then maximized that opportunity to create a training platform for Nigerian graduates in order for them to get exposed and have the opportunity of employment and internships in multi national companies like KPMG, PwC, Deloitte, McKinsey, Goldman Sach etc.
There are also other people both within and outside Africa who created opportunities in the midst of problems. And that's why some countries see the opportunity of achieving greater development especially when there is economic recession, because that's when entrepreneurs emerge.
The point I am trying to make here is that we should see opportunities in the midst of problems, not problems in the midst of problems. Look around you and check any difficulty or problem in your home, school, office and the society at large.
Also it is also important to note that creating opportunities cannot be done only by entrepreneurs. Even the working class people should also see opportunities when there are problems in their workplaces by innovating something new that can solve their company's problems and that can also make gain advantage over their competitors. An example in this sense, is Taiwo Oyedele, the Head of Tax and Regulatory Services at Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC). He innovated something unique into the tax unit of PwC by helping their clients reduce their tax liabilities without the incidence of tax evasion and avoidance. And with that he became the youngest partner ever in the history of PwC and other accounting firms in Nigeria.
So it is important to see opportunities in the midst of problems anywhere we find ourselves.
For the university students, there are opportunities like;
1. Organizing tutorial lectures: This is essential to the very brilliant students in tertiary institutions, because at a point in time their assistance will be needed by the average students in certain subject and courses. They can use that opportunity to create tutorial centres, past questions and solutions in order to make money for themselves.
2. Trading Activities: Students of universities, polytechnics and colleges can engage in buying and selling activities in order to solve the problem of going to markets far from campuses to get what they need.
3. Communication Services: Students can not do without making phone calls and browsing. With that opportunities like data subscription can exist.
4. Creation of Academic Softwares: This can solve the academic problems like timetable issues, lack of accessibility to handouts and materials of various courses etc.
