The Road From Campus To Corporate.
It is no longer a new thing that when students move out of their various universities and polytechnics, they will be a seeking for jobs. But some set of students will decide to own their own business. But the question is, how do they cope with the kind of situations they find themselves in their various workplaces? Are the workplaces the same as the tertiary institutions? The answer to it is NO. Because what they expect from them in the labour market is quite different from their expectations in the higher institutions.
It is very displeasing today that a lot of extraordinary brilliant students later end up becoming unemployed. The reason is that some of them do not possess extracurricular skills, talents and all other requirements that can make them employable, that is, the fact is that these students are not employable.
And this will let us know the fact that we have four types of students/graduates.
1. Brilliant & Intelligent Students.
2. Brilliant but not Intelligent Students.
3. Intelligent but not brilliant students.
4. Students That Are Not Brilliant And Also Not Intelligent.
The number one set of students are the kind of students who are exceptionally brilliant. They are also referred to as the A-students. At the end of their programme in the university, they either come out with a first class or a minimum of a second class upper.
In addition to that, they are also intelligent. That is they are very smart. And when they attend any interview,they are always outstanding and these type of students find it easy to defend their first class. Examples include The founder of Adams Tutorial College in Lagos, who graduated with a first class in Chemical Engineering in Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and was among the best graduating students in the faculty, Vincent Adeoba, the former President of the department of Management & Accounting OAU 2013/14 academic session who graduated with a second class upper and now he is the CEO of Seravision Brooks, in Lagos.
2. Brilliant but not Intelligent Students: These types of students are only academically sound. Majority of them happen to be first class graduates. But the disadvantage about them is that they are not intelligent and smart and thus making them unemployable. They lack extracurricular skills which could have made them more exceptional compared to other students. They even don't even participate in extracurricular and social activities in school. All they know is "academics".
3. Intelligent but not Brilliant Students: These types of students are very intelligent and smart but the fact is, they are not brilliant. But they can prove themselves as being employable. Some of them end up graduating with a second class lower or third class but the fact is even if you are a first class graduate, you may later end up becoming an employee under them. Some of them are managers and CEOs in the labour market and some are wealthy. But there is one secret about them when they tender their C.Vs for employment. And that is, they don't include their honors or CGPA just to show that they are smart to work with any organization.
4.Students Who Are Not Brilliant and not also Intelligent: These types of students are not brilliant and are not also intelligent.
But the question everyone must ask himself or herself is that "which one of the four do I belong to?" and which"
one of them do I want to belong to?"
The fact is just that the most important thing they need from graduates in the labour market is Intelligence &Smartness not Brilliance. When some companies mention a minimum of a second class upper (2-1), it is not because the category of students with those honors are the best but they do so purposely to reduce the population of applicants. I wish maybe one day, accounting and auditing firms will skip to a minimum of second class lower (2-2).
And this will bring me to the final conclusion that " Good Brains Are Better Than Good Grades.
