The Nature of Delta State Economy.

Delta State is located in the Southern region of Nigeria. It's capital is Asaba which is located at the northern region of the state. Delta State is known as an oil producing state contributing 21.56-35% of the nation's oil output. The oil producing local government areas in the state include Warri North and South, Ughelli North and South, Isoko North and South, Burutu, Sapele, Ethiope East and West, Okpe and Ndokwa East and West. It has refinery and a petrochemical plant located in Warri.



The most populous and commercial centre of the state is Warri, and it is located at the Southern region of the state.

Apart from oil production activities, the state is also engaged into agricultural activities like fishery, forestry, veterinary, planning and research. Agricultural programs in the state include Delta Agricultural Development Program (DADP), Task Force on Communal Planning, Fishermen Farm Settlement Scheme and Tree Crop Unit.

The state also involves itself into manufacturing activities and its industries include:

1. Glass Factory at Ughelli.

2. Asaba Textile Mills.

3. African Timber and Plywood Factory at Sapele.

Apart from crude oil, other mineral resources in the state include kaolin, silica, lignite, industrial clay, decorative rocks, limestone etc.

The state also has seaports which are located at Warri, Burutu and Sapele and petroleum terminals at Escravos and Forcados.

The educational institutions in the state are:

1. Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun.

2. Delta State University, Asaba

3. Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun.

4. Delta State School of Maritime Technology, Burutu.

5. Delta State Polytechnics at Ogara, Ozoro and Ogwashi-Uku.

6. Nigerian Maritime University, Warri.

7. Delta State College of Health Technology, Ughelli.

8. The Film and Broadcast Academy, Ozoro.

9. Western Delta University, Oghara.

10. National Open University of Nigeria at Asaba, Emevor and Owhrode.

11. University of Information and Communication Technology, Agbor.

12. Conarina School of Maritime and Transport Technology, Oria-Abraka. etc.   

The tourist and recreational centres include:

1. The Nana's Palace.

2. The River Ethiope.

3. The Niger Bridge.

4. Mungo Park House.

5. Falcorp Mangrove Park. etc.
